.. is reported to have the title The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ and to be published by Canongate next spring.
Is there something in the air? You can listen to four atheists here on the Virtual Philosopher blog of Nigel Warburton, OU lecturer. They defend the importance of debating their position.

You know, I read that and I thought it was a joke! It sounds like a joke – The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ published by Canongate? It made me think of a scandalously heretical man of the cloth ranting and raving at the altar!
Off to listen to the atheist debate.
Oh I hope you’re right! It must be a send-up, mustn’t it?
“Oh I hope you’re right! It must be a send-up, mustn’t it?”
It certainly isn’t. The accepted teaching about Jesus preaching a ‘gospel of salvation’ is not borne out by the words recorded as actually having been spoken by him. It cetainly is the greatest *story* ever told. He told his followers that his purpose on earth was to turn the Jewish people back to God.
Christine – thank you and you may well have a point. If the book does materialise, I’m sure this debate will rage.
My earlier response was poorly phrased – I was reacting to what seems to me a surprisingly provocative, message-laden title. I make no comment on the substance.
The title is a good way to make sure the book gets noticed
I hope Pullman will come up with the book ‘Dust’ which he is reputed to be writing. It addesses the ‘dust’ concept from His Dark Materials.
Now, if he was to find a way to stop dust landing, I for one would be thrilled. No more dusting.
Well it’s still not on Pullman’s official website but the story has been picked up by The Telegraph.
Ah Christine I don’t mind the dust – it was Quentin Crisp I think who said that after the first three years, the dust doesn’t get any thicker.
